Frequently asked questions regarding voting:

How do I register to vote? You may register to vote in person at the township office or at any Secretary of State office. You may also register by mail, with forms available at, however, some restrictions may apply. There is no fee to register.

Who is eligible to vote? In order to vote you must be: a citizen of the United States, a resident of the State of Michigan (and will be at least a 30-day resident of your city or township by election day), a registered voter, and 18 years of age on or before election day.

Military and Overseas Civilian Voters? Special services are provided to assist military and overseas civilian voters participate in elections. If you are a military or overseas civilian voter who is eligible to vote in Michigan or to find out additional information, please visit, or,  or contact the clerk at (231) 582-1033.

How do I get an absent voter ballot? Absentee ballots are available for all elections. They allow voters to cast a ballot without being present on election day. As a registered voter, you may request an absent voter ballot if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • 60 years of age or older.
  • Expecting to be out of town on election day
  • Physically unable to attend the polls without assistance
  • Unable to vote in person because of your religion
  • Appointed to work as a precinct inspector in a different precinct than where you reside
  • Confined to jail awaiting arraignment or trial

NOTE: A person who registers to vote by mail must vote in person the first time. This restriction does not apply to overseas voters, voters who are handicapped, or voters who are older than 60.

To request an absent voter ballot for an upcoming election, please call the Clerk at (231) 582-1033 (please leave a message) and you will be mailed an application. A permanent list of absentee voters is maintained by the clerk's office for individuals wanting to receive an application prior to each election. The applications are automatically mailed four to six weeks prior to all elections. If you qualify by meeting one of the above listed reasons, call the Township Clerk and we will add your name to the permanent list.
